Banded Onyx is a variety of Chalcedony, a micro-crystalline Quartz, silicon dioxide, that exhibits straight, parallel banding. The colour of the bands range from and include a mixture of white, black, brown, orange, red, yellow and green, depending on the mineral inclusion. The orange/red/brown coloured varieties of Banded Onyx are usually known as Sardonyx.

Dyes are sometimes used to produce certain coloured varieties.
